Arranged Marriages: Are they for YOU?! PART 1
As promised to a close friend of mine I will be blogging about my thoughts on arranged marriages. I want to start off by telling you the dictionary meaning of arranged marriage, "An arranged marriage is a marriage where the marital partners are chosen by others based on considerations other than the pre-existing mutual attraction of the partners." In punjabi terms its when a friend of both the groom's family and the bride's family introduce each others family. This "friend" is called a Vichola. (I hope I spelt that right!) Well anyways being a first generation Canadian born child my parents had an arranged marriage back in India. 99% of all parents that came to the western world from India had arranged marriage. And now there is an increased rate of kids that were born in Canada or USA that are going back to their homeland to get arranged marriage. However, the process of arranged marriage has changed since our parents got married. Back in the day of our parents getting married since the distance of the two people getting married was quite far you prolly saw the person you were going to marry maybe 3 times in a span of 4 months. There wasn't much communication between the two that were getting married. It was usually if your parents believed that your new in-laws family was good then you had to obey your parents and marry the individual they told you to marry. The arranged marriage process is not just happening in India it has spread over to the western world. Thousands of parents that had arranged marriages in India are bringing this tradition to the western world. Meaning that all across Canada and America parents are introducing their sons and daughters to other people from either Canada, America, England, etc. So this doesn't mean that your going to marry a (FOB) lol. Some kids just because they dont have the time to find a suitable husband or wife leave it up to their parents to find someone for them. In some cases arranged marriages can be a great success if done right. This is only part one of my take on arrange marriages. Part two of arranged marriages will be discussing those far to fast arranged marriages that take place in India. Hope you had fun reading this! Please feel free to comment and dont be shy lol (you know who I'm talking about :P)
