Arranged Marriages: Part 3

heyyyyyyy loyal blog readers........sorry I haven't been keeping up to date with my blog.....just been crazy busy with work and university.......I had a few minutes so I thought I would write about my co-workers views of arranged marriages. I started working at the daycare when I turned 18.......I was the first unmarried sikh punjabi girl that was working at the daycare. From my mother's tellings my co-workers had understood that evey sikh girl had an arranged marriage. So after weeks of getting acquainted with them they began to ask me these questions about arranged marriage. At the time I was far to young to give them adequate answers for their questions. I explained to them how yea it was popular in our culture for the parents to find a suitable husband or wife for their child. I also told them about how my parents had an arranged marriage and have been married for more than 20 years. They were astonished in the sacrifice and commitment that two people who had only met a few times could spend the rest of their lives together. That is when I came in with the counter argument that people who choose the route of love marriage could fall apart and eventually result in divorcing each other. I explained that it didn't matter the mode in which you got married and talked about despite being in an arranged marriage the divorce rate is far higher in people that marry out of love. They then asked me if I would get an arranged marriage or go the way of love. At the time I was far to young to answer and perhaps even today I'm still not able to answer such a question. With such a question so many different elements come into play. It's not a straightforward yes or no answer. After speaking to my co-workers about the issue of arranged marriage they began to see it in a different light and with a little reasoning and explanation they began to realize it as not such a bad idea.
